Author
John.
He was a son of Zebedee, a brother of James, a disciple of Jesus, an apostle.
John wrote five New Testament books:
- The Gospel of John
- the three letters called I John, 2 John, and 3 John
- the book called Revelation.
Purpose
John says he is writing:
- 1:3 so that ye also may have fellowship with us.
- 1:4 so that your joy may be full.
- 2:1 so that ye sin not.
- 2:26 concerning them that seduce you.
- 5:13 so that ye may know that ye have eternal life,
- 5:13 so that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
According to I John 2:12-14:
- I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
- I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning.
I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one.
I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
- I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning.
I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong,
and the word of God abideth in you,
and ye have overcome the wicked one.
